Best Practices for Handling Media

WordPress offers many options for adding content to your website: paragraph text, headings, lists, audio, video, etc. Having a large selection of content options can be extremely useful, however, it is important to recognize that all types of content take up different amounts of storage. A blog post with only paragraph text is likely to take up much less space than a post with a video. All Domain of One’s Own accounts come with a limited amount of storage; to learn more about your storage, check out this Cleaning up Storage Space. Here are some media practices we recommend in order to maximize your storage space.

Embedding Media #

When including media on your website, such as audio, video images or large documents, it is best to embed the media rather than directly uploading it onto your site. In the content editor of a Page or Post you can:

  • Click the blue plus at the top of your post. Additionally, if can press the the black “+” that appears in the editing window

  • Under the “blocks” tab, scroll down to see the “Embeds” Section.

  • Click the platform your video/audio is being hosted on (Note: Some files may need to be embedded through the Custom HTML block).
  • Paste the link into the appropriate box.

Image Resolution #

If you’ve already uploaded many images to your site at a higher resolution than is needed one option to consider is installing a plugin to reduce the size of the images. One plugin that works well for this is Smush. If you haven’t installed plugins on your site you can follow the WordPress guide on finding and installing plugins.
