What is Domain of One’s Own?

Domain of One’s Own (sometimes called UMW Domains, or “DoOO”) is an initiative that allows every UMW student, faculty, and staff member to claim a free domain name (web address) and start building a website that is uniquely their own.

This webspace can be used for personal or class projects, and students can take their domain with them when they graduate.

Why Domain of One’s Own?

The Domain of One’s Own program offers the UMW community a platform to:

  • Master the tools and technology that make up the web while building their own space online.
  • Explore the notion of digital identity and how publishing on the web can frame an online persona.
  • Learn to take ownership over the content they put on the web instead of handing it to third-party publishers.

Domain of One’s Own vs. UMW Blogs

Simple or short-term projects may be better suited for UMW’s other web publishing platform, UMW Blogs. Read more about the difference in our guide.
